When Funny man, Byron Allen, a former comedian, Comics Unleashed, bought the Weather Channel some failed to see a connection between the new ownership and Allen’s other companies – and, thus, decided it must be a joke.
Some joke. Funny Man, Byron Allen has been carefully assembling companies for years, mostly out of the limelight. He owns Entertainment Studios, the U.S.’s largest producer of first-run syndicated programming; operates a film distribution business that just spent $16 million to promote “Chappaquiddick;” and, now, the WC. He says, “There were a lot of lean years. My home went in and out of foreclosure 14 times. My credit was so bad, there were people who wouldn’t take my cash.” Funny man!
He began his current career with videotaping publicity-tour interviews with movies stars and packaged them as a syndicated TV show. Now he produces more than 30 relatively low-budget programs like his talk show, “Comics Unleashed” and a new game show, “Funny You Should Ask.” He moved into film distribution in 2015, acquiring Freestyle Releasing. The WC is now his most-widely carried channel, reaching 80 million homes. Those who applaud Allen’s success as a businessman say, “there’s a good chance that the WC, or whatever it’s called 5 years from now, will not look at all the way it does now.”
